On Page Factors - 2

In the section called “On Page Factors - 1” we looked at how the search engine spiders view your page and how to insert keywords or phrases in the optimum positions.  In this section we will look at the code behind each web page and look at some important factors and again the best place to insert keywords or phrases.

Originally search engines used to look at what you put in the keywords section (meta keywords) of your code as being the most important factors however Search Engine Optimisation Companies and web designers found it very easy cheat or fudge the search engines and so Google for example now pay much less attention to this area (Bing and Yahoo still look at Keywords so they are still important but less so for Google).

Google look at what you insert into your Title (meta title) and your Description (meta description) as being very important and so we should look at how you view this part of your web page.  A common mistake made by many web design companies is to insert your company name into the title and description.  This is a wasted opportunity (unless you have a very common company name like Poker Ltd for example) if your company name is in your domain name then this should be enough for you to appear at the top of Google when someone searches for you by company name.  However it is worth considering that if someone is searching for your company name then they already know who you are, you should be more interested in the people who are searching for your products or services because you are looking for potential new customers.

To see what appears in your code simply right click on any text or clear space on your web page (start with your home page but this can be repeated for every page in your web site).  You will see a drop down box appear and one of the items will say “view source” or “view page source”.  Click on this and then a box will appear containing code, you need to scroll down the page until you see “Meta Title” and “Meta Description” a really useful video to help understand this can be found at Search Engine Marketing Experts.
